Legal Fees: Comparing Us vs. Them

Before you sign the engagement letter with a law firm and provide the retainer check, ask them about their billing policies (in addition to their hourly rate). Administrative costs can be expensive. How much will you be charged for merely receiving a communication? What if you want to ask questions from time to time? Is all of this charged at a senior partner rate? Should it be? We don't think so.

Also, ask the party that signs you up what role they will play with the patent application. Ask who will work on your project and how much time is estimated for preparing each patent application. If they won't give you an estimate, go elsewhere!
